Description-internal
Butomaceae are aquatic monocots that may be recognised by their long, three-angled leaves and axillary, scapose, umbellate, bracteate inflorescence. The flowers are perfect and there are clearly two distinct perianth whorls although both are petaloid; the fruit is a follicle. (APG II website, 6.5.2009)
