The “Old Botanical Garden” was established 1829 by the Higher Forestry academy seated in Hohenheim Palace directly in front of the building for teaching purposes.

Before 1829 the whole compound south of the Palace was free of large trees – just low hedges and container plants lined the paths, which was then planted with a 30 to 50 m broad stripe of woody plants. The oldest specimen in the Palace Park should stem from these early plantings. Unfortunately there are no detailed records from the time.
