Southwest of the medicinal gardens lies the phylogenetic systematic section. On an area of 0.76 ha annually between 1500 and 2500 species are planted according to the system of their natural relationship. Through this the phylogenetic connection within the higher plants can be demonstrated.

The necessity of the categorization of plant species into systematic groups results from the high number of species (at the moment more than 250.000 species of seed plants are known). The categorization is predominantly conducted according to the general similarity.

This is called “natural system” and at the same time reflects the phylogenetic relationship: plant species are summarized to genera and these again to families. The main criterion for this is the setup of the flower.

The arrangement of the flower beds was established in the 1970s and expresses the valid system at that time. By fundamental new knowledge in the past 5 to 10 years families have been newly arranged and we can at the moment reproduce this only inaccurately.
